This summer I attended Habonim Dror’s summer camp Moshava in Maryland USA as I have for the past 6 summers.
Habonim Dror is a worldwide progressive Labor Zionist movement, which focuses on educating towards social justice, peace, equality and stronger Jewish identity, while bonding with individuals from around the world. Habonim has summer camps in 17 different places around the world, including Turkey, Australia, Germany, Mexico and North America, as well as a group of graduates of the movement who immigrated to Israel.
Moshava is one of the seven camps in North America and it has a growing number of campers each year. At camp, each day we have an hour in which we learn about Israel. During these hours we have a fun activity, and then we have discussions about different topics that have to do with Israel. During these discussions I always educate others and bring the Israeli side to the surface. I also tell all my friends about how it is to live in Israel and explain about wars and politics.
Throughout the year I stay in touch with all my friends at camp and I explain what’s going on in Israel. When a couple of weeks ago there was tension between Israel and Gaza I explained to people what happened and why.
Moshava has been my second home since my first summer there, and it has been since then an important part of my life. Every summer makes me love it even more than I did before because of the special atmosphere it has, but especially because of the people. The camp community is filled with love and everyone can be open about themselves.
