EL AL was officially established in 1949 although the company’s first flight was in 1948.
In 1977 the government decided that the company wouldn’t fly planes on Saturdays because of the importance of the Shabbat as a holy day for the Jews.
On April 1980, after the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt was signed, the first flight to Cairo was made by El Al. On May 24 1991 the company flew 1087 immigrants from Ethiopia as part of Operation Solomon.
In 2001 after the 9/11 terror attacks, El Al was the first company that flew to the United States, two days before the rest of the airline companies.
The company flies to all possible destinations in the world. The company has 40 planes (as of November 2010).
The company focuses on the international flights market. El Al has some unique features, including advance security measurements on the ground and it the air.
