At 16:22 the wall of the prison was broken. The Irgun`s act succeeded. 41 members of the Jewish Resistance Movements – the Irgun and the Lehi, who were imprisoned there for many years, could escape. This attack had been planned for a long time.

This is a description of the famous Acre Prison break. On May 4, 1947 an attacking group of 34 fighters came to the prison. The prisoners knew about the plan, and helped the fighters. Some of them delayed the British soldiers with hand grenades and other weapons that were smuggled into the prison, by other Irgun members.

Not all the results of the operation were positive: during the operation, 6 prisoners and 3 soldiers of the attacking force, including the operation commander, were killed. Another 5 were caught. In addition The British soldiers caught 8 prisoners that failed to escape. 180 Arab prisoners took advantage of the moment, and escaped too.

The history of the place started in the Ottoman period. In the northern part of the city of Acre there was a fortress, which served the regional rulers. Under the British mandate the place became a central prison. Nine Jewish Underground Prisoners that were sentenced to death were hanged.

Today, the prison is a museum, and the visitors can see the prisoners` rooms, the prison yard, the gallows room and a memorial room to the 9 Jewish heroes.
