Ajami is an Israeli film by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, based on real events in the Ajami neighborhood in Jaffa.

The plot is about Omer, a young Muslim, and his family, who are dealing with threats on their lives from a Bedouin crime-family because of an old vendetta.

Omer is in love with the daughter of a rich Christian restaurateur called Abu Alias. One of Abu’s employees is Malek, a young Palestinian from the territories who needs money for his sick mother.

Simultaneously, Dando, a poilce officer who fights against the crime in the Ajami neighborhood, struggles with the disappearance of his soldier brother, and Binj, a cook, asks the authorities to move to Neve – Tzedek in order to live with his Jew girlfriend.

The movie won 5 Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscars), including the best movie award.

Ajami was also nominated this year for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, but it didn’t win.
