Gilad Shalit was born on August 28, 1986 in Naharia. He went to Manor Kabri High School and graduated with distinction in sciences.
Gilad joined the army in 2005 and served in battalion 71 of brigade 188. In 2006 a small group of Hamas people attacked a Merkava tank, which was guarding the security fence along the Israeli border with Gaza. The tank commander and another soldier were killed during the attack. The Hamas captured Gilad and another soldier who was probably injured during the attack.
Since Gilad was captured we have had glimpses of him but we can’t be sure what his condition is. The Israeli government had negotiated for and received 3 letters, an audio recording and a video tape showing he is still alive in September 2009.
After the tape was published there was a discussion on Shalit’s physical condition. Some claim he needs medical care that the Hamas can’t provide, although Palestinian sources say he is in good health. Shalit himself said in the tape that his captors are treating him well.
The Israeli citizens are concerned and worried about Shalit and keep organizing protests and rallies to “Free Gilad Shalit.” The negotiations are still in progress and we all hope there will be a sudden development that would bring him back alive from captivity. Although we can’t do much as civilians we still hope and pray that he will be home soon.
